octubre: Give us our daily bread
What started as a craving for hearty multi-grain bread from home turned into a weekly tradition of baking bread with Sarah on our lazy Sundays. At first we experimented with combining some recipes online so that we made sure we had access to all the ingredients here in Mexico. Then we realized that we had only one measuring cup and no measuring spoons. SURPRISE! We successfully made a dynamite loaf of whole-wheat, honey and oat bread using nothing more than our random 2/3 cup, estimates of everything else, and my coffee-shop experienced fingers for testing the temperature for the yeast.
Friends, neighbors, and coworkers quickly started to learn of our tradition. They have enjoyed trying it and due to the interest, Sarah and I made eight loaves last week and gave away all but two of them (one for each of our homes). Now Marce, her friend Sylvia, and Marce’s three daughters want to come over, have a baking party, and learn how we make it. Marce even suggested making batches big enough that we would ask the baker down the street to use his ovens! I guess that despite our fumbling through our jobs, the language, the cultural barriers… Sarah and I found at least one thing that we are good at – baking bread.
